Our school believes that its greatest strength lies in its learners and the values we instill in them. We are committed not only to academic excellence, but to shaping responsible, confident, and purpose-driven young people who are ready to contribute meaningfully to society.
We are especially proud of graduates who complete their Bachelor of Education (BEd) qualifications. When teaching opportunities are available, the school welcomes applications from these alumni — not out of preference, but because they understand our culture, our discipline, and the values that define us. They once lived the standards we uphold, and many return ready to serve, lead, and give back to the very community that shaped them.
In addition, we regularly invite universities, training institutions, and career guidance representatives to provide learners with up-to-date information about courses, bursaries, and professional pathways. Through mentorship, alumni engagement, and career exposure initiatives, we ensure that our learners are supported long after they leave our gates.

BSc Computer Science @ UP
Former School President
Platform Architect
"I am Nkosinathi Ngwenya, the 2024 President of Hoye Secondary School. My journey started in the same classrooms you sit in today. Through hard work and the foundation laid at Hoye, I earned my place at the University of Pretoria, where I am currently pursuing a BSc in Computer Science. Transitioning from the leader of this school to a student at one of the top tech universities in the country has been an incredible shift, but the discipline I learned here made it possible."
"I’ve always been fascinated by how the digital world works, but my true inspiration came from seeing how information—or the lack of it—affects people. I realized that a website isn't just code; it’s a bridge. I wanted to learn how to build tools that solve real problems, like making sure every student at Hoye has the same access to information as someone in a private school in Sandton."
"Hoye taught me that leadership isn't about the title of 'President'; it’s about service and responsibility. The challenges we faced and the 'SKAVS' principles we followed taught me how to be resilient. Studying at UP is tough, but when things get hard, I remember the grit I developed at Hoye. This school didn't just give me a matric certificate; it gave me the character to compete at a national level."
"The most complex challenge was architecting the Online Application System. Building a front-end is one thing, but creating a secure bridge where the Administration can manage data while Applicants can track their progress in real-time was a major hurdle. I had to learn how to manage 'State'—ensuring that when a student checks their status, the database reflects the Admin’s latest decision instantly. I overcame this through hours of debugging and studying how enterprise-level tracking systems work to ensure the school's data remains organized and professional."
"On the technical side, I utilized a modern stack including HTML5, Tailwind CSS for responsive design, JavaScript (ES6+) for logic, and MySQL for robust data management. However, 'Soft Skills' were just as vital. I heavily relied on Technical Communication. I had to act as a Project Manager—regularly updating the school leadership on our milestones, explaining technical roadblocks in simple terms, and managing expectations regarding deadlines and feature launches."
"This project demystified the 'black box' of online systems for me. I finally moved from asking 'how does an application process work?' to actually building one from scratch. I learned about Full-Stack Architecture—how the user interface (Frontend) talks to the database (Backend). Most importantly, I learned that coding is only 50% of the job; the other 50% is understanding user needs and ensuring the system is intuitive for people who aren't tech-savvy."
"My biggest piece of advice is this: Do not let external factors—like not having a background in CAT or never having coded before—make you feel like tech isn't for you. I started where you are. If you have the passion and the curiosity, that is your 'entry ticket.' In the tech world, your willingness to learn matters more than what you knew yesterday. As Bjarne Stroustrup once said: 'Design and programming are human activities; forget that and all is lost.' If you want to solve human problems, you belong in tech. Go for it with everything you have."
"You have to realize that the resources you need are already at your fingertips. Don’t wait for a formal class; use your time outside of school to explore. There are countless free platforms and apps where you can master the basics of logic and syntax. Start small, get comfortable, and then challenge yourself to build something real. Also, keep your eyes on the horizon: AI is no longer the future—it is the present. Pay attention to how AI is changing the world and learn how to use it as a tool."
"To the learners: Your current circumstances are just your starting point, not your destination. To the teachers and staff: Thank you for fostering an environment where a boy from Hoye could dream of building systems for the world. I built this portal as a gift to my home, but I hope it serves as a reminder that we are capable of excellence. Stay disciplined, stay curious, and remember—Success is a habit, not an act. Hoye to the world!"
